Quick guide to Text Messaging and Instant Messaging in Italian

When messaging in Italian, there are lots of abbreviations you may come across. And unfortunately, you won鈥檛 find any of them in your trusty Italian dictionary!

To help you understand what your Italian friends have written, I have put together a list of common Italian text abbreviations. It鈥檚 not perfect Italian and you shouldn鈥檛 use these outside of informal messaging, but it鈥檚 good to keep them up your sleeve! You never know, these abbreviations may even help you to send 鈥榤essaggini鈥 (messages) more quickly too.

The letter K

The letter k doesn鈥檛 exist in the Italian alphabet, but it is on Italian phones, tablets and computers. It is used to replace a hard c sound. I have listed the abbreviation, the full Italian word, and the English translation, see some examples below:

Anke 鈥 anche 鈥 also

Ki 鈥 chi 鈥 who

Ke 鈥 che 鈥 what

Km 鈥 come 鈥 how / like

The letter X

If there鈥檚 an x in your Italian message, it means 鈥榩er鈥 (for, by, to). The reason for this is that the multiplication sign in Italian is called 鈥榩er鈥, so 2 x 4 = 8 is read 鈥榙ue per quattro fa otto鈥. You can use 鈥榵鈥 any time you would use the word 鈥榩er鈥, as well as in longer words that include 鈥榩er鈥, such as:

Xci貌 鈥 perci貌 鈥 therefore

X貌 鈥 per貌 鈥 but / however

Xsona 鈥 persona 鈥 person

Xk 鈥 perch猫 鈥 why / because

Prox 鈥 prossimo/a 鈥 next

Xfetto 鈥 perfetto - perfect

Numbers and maths

The number 6 is used as an abbreviation for the word 鈥榮ei鈥, meaning 鈥榶ou are鈥. For example:

Dve 6? 鈥 dove sei? 鈥 where are you?

C6 鈥 ci sei 鈥 are you there? / are you in?

Plus and minus are 鈥榩i霉鈥 and 鈥榤eno鈥 in Italian and their symbols are used to mean 鈥榤ore鈥 or 鈥榣ess鈥:

+ - pi霉 鈥 more

鈭 - meno - less

+ trd 鈥 pi霉 tardi 鈥 later

鈭抦ale 鈥 meno male 鈥 thank goodness

Dropping letters

Sometimes abbreviations are created by losing vowels, such as:

Cmq 鈥 comunque 鈥 anyway

Nn 鈥 non 鈥 not

Dv 鈥 dove - where

Dp 鈥 dopo 鈥 later / after

Scs 鈥 scusa 鈥 sorry

Cn 鈥 con 鈥 with

Sn 鈥 sono 鈥 I am

T 鈥 ti 鈥 you

M 鈥 mi 鈥 me

Brv 鈥 bravo/brava 鈥 good/clever

Vbn 鈥 va bene 鈥 that鈥檚 ok

Tnt 鈥 tanto 鈥 a lot / very much

Other words are just shortened:

C sent 鈥 ci sentiamo 鈥 we speak

C ved 鈥 ci vediamo 鈥 we see each other

Risp 鈥 risondi 鈥揳nswer

Msg 鈥 messaggio - message

How to end a message

At the end of a message, you may see some of these words and expressions:

Pfv 鈥 per favour - please

Grz 鈥 grazie 鈥 thanks

Bc 鈥 baci 鈥 kisses

Tvb 鈥 ti voglio bene 鈥 I love you (to friends and family)

Tvtb 鈥 ti voglio tanto bene 鈥 I love you so much (to friends and family)

Ta 鈥 ti amo 鈥 I love you (romantically)

And one final sentence here to try out your skills. What does this mean in Italian?

Dve 6? Nn c sent d tnt tmp! C ved la sett prox?

Here it is in proper Italian:

Dove sei? Non ci sentiamo da tanto tempo. Ci vediamo la settimana prossima?

And in English:

Where are you? We haven鈥檛 spoken in a long time. Shall we see each other next week?
